CSO Evokes the Land of the Free on Sunday

This Sunday, March 3, the Concordia Symphony Orchestra evokes the 聽in Tegler Student Centre (3 pm).
The concert centers around an epic favourite, Anton铆n聽Dvo艡谩k鈥檚 Symphony No. 9,聽鈥淔rom the New World.鈥 The聽Czech聽composer聽wrote his last symphony聽while living as an immigrant in聽Manhattan鈥檚 Upper East Side in 1893. The piece, shaped by his exposure to African-American spirituals and Native American music, instantly became an emblem of North American symphonic writing: the聽鈥渓and of the free鈥澛爐hrough the lens of a foreigner, and yet one of the most eloquent portrayals of the聽country.

Brightening the afternoon is聽a聽tour de force聽of the string聽virtuoso聽repertoire,聽the聽Sibelius Violin Concerto,聽rendered by acclaimed Canadian violinist Virginie Gagn茅.聽The program ends with a celebration of聽colours driven聽by the South-American rhythms of Guarnieri鈥檚聽Dan莽a Brasileira.
