The aim of the talk is to present the concept of storytelling, which is expressed through textiles (readymade clothes, tailoring materials) and handicrafts (embroidery, crochet, knitting, etc.), the elements of clothing or everyday human environment, often the closest one.
In this case, the means and matter of the story are not words or sounds; they are textiles sewn or remade in such a way, that they represent the story created by their authors. Clothes or clothes accessories can also be the subject of a story, a pretext for drawing a broader social context in which textiles play a socially or culturally significant role.
The primary subject of the talk is the work of three Canadian artists: Leanne Prain, Rosa Halpern and Rita Leistner, whose ideas are all intertwined in a special leather jacket.
Kalina KukielkoΒ is an assistant professor at the Institute of Sociology, University of Szczecin, Poland. In her research activity, she primarily focused on the relationships between means of communication prevailing in a given period and social life and individual human life. For over 20 years, she has been exploring Marshall McLuhanβs theory of media, and especially his conception of art and artistic practice.
In 2019, she was a Visiting Scholar at ΒιΆΉΤ΄΄ with her project on Rita Leistnerβs war photography. Kalinaβs book published in 2021 and titled WspΓ³Εczesna wojna na fotografiach Rity Leistner which loosely translates to Contemporary War in Rita Leistnerβs Photographs is based on that project.. She recently began work on her new project about fashion revolutions in the context of McLuhanβs theory.
